This Holiday Season, Let’s Trade 300 Plastic Bottles for a Smile from the Ocean

Our Choices Shape the Future.

Every year, more than 60 million trees are felled globally for Christmas celebrations. An average artificial Christmas tree generates approximately 40 kilograms of carbon emissions, equivalent to the emissions produced by a standard car traveling around 160 kilometers.

These trees may briefly be part of the holiday joy for a family, but they could eventually end up as a burden on the oceans.

Yet this glowing Christmas tree is reborn from over 300 discarded plastic bottles. Waste can also possess beauty and warmth. Each plastic bottle was once a potential threat to the oceans; now, they serve as carriers of environmental protection concepts.

No tree felling, less waste—let’s celebrate the holidays with a lighter footprint on the planet.
This kind of upcycling creativity is spreading across the globe, with festive decorations made from recycled or repurposed plastics emerging as a new symbol of holiday celebrations.

In the Philippines, a group of fishermen collect abandoned fishing nets and plastic bottles from the ocean to create Christmas trees and ornaments. In Sweden, a company has developed Christmas trees entirely made from biodegradable materials, which can be buried and decomposed in soil after the holidays.

Genuine environmental protection does not mean giving up celebrations, but reimagining ways to celebrate. A Christmas tree crafted from over 300 plastic bottles not only reduces the likelihood of single-use plastic pollution, but also conveys the concept of a circular economy to the public.

For families, there are various options to celebrate holidays in an eco-friendly way: stack old books into the shape of a Christmas tree, make decorations using tree branches and pinecones, or even project images of Christmas trees on walls with LED lights. Furthermore, reduce holiday packaging waste. Globally, packaging waste increases by around 25% during the Christmas season each year, with a large amount of plastic packaging eventually finding its way into the oceans. Opt for simple packaging or replace paper wrapping with cloth gift bags.

After the holiday season, this plastic bottle Christmas tree will be carefully disassembled, and its 300-plus plastic bottles will be recycled again, ready for their next rebirth.

Every plastic bottle prevented from entering the ocean is a Christmas gift to marine life. Our holiday joy does not have to become a burden on the planet.
